Thor: Ragnarok begins with Thor imprisoned by Surtur, a fiery demon who reveals that Ragnarok (the prophesied destruction of Asgard) is near. Thor defeats Surtur and believes he has stopped the prophecy.
Returning to Asgard, Thor discovers Loki has impersonated Odin and sent him to Earth. Thor and Loki find Odin in Norway, but Odin reveals he is dying, and with his death, Hela, their elder sister, will be freed from her imprisonment.
Hela emerges as the Goddess of Death, destroys Mjolnir, and forces Thor and Loki out of the Bifrost. Thor lands on the garbage planet Sakaar, ruled by the eccentric Grandmaster. There, he is enslaved and forced to fight in gladiator battles, where he reunites with the Hulk, who has been trapped on Sakaar since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
With the help of Valkyrie, a former Asgardian warrior, Thor, Loki, and Hulk escape Sakaar to return to Asgard. They face Hela in a climactic battle, ultimately realizing the only way to save their people is to allow Surtur to destroy Asgard, fulfilling the prophecy of Ragnarok.
Thor, now the King of the Asgardian survivors, leads his people to find a new home on Earth.
